The following chart titled "A State-By-State Look at Consensual Crime," on pages 631 and 632 in Peter McWilliams' 1996 book Ain't Nobody's Business If You Do: The Absurdity of Consensual Crimes in Our Free Country, compares the legal status of various sexual activities such as adultery, prostitution, and pornography (plus assisted suicide) across 50 states plus the District of Columbia (DC). The author states in the book that "the chart is as accurate as we could make it as of early 1996." [Editor's Note: The author appears to have missed Rhode Island as a state where prostitution was legal in 1996 and remains legal as of July 3, 2009.]
The frowning emoticon denotes the author's displeasure over the law(s) passed in that state. The numbering of states and highlighting of the key and columns do not appear in the original publication.
